Introducing our next CEO - Mark Mitchke

Introducing our next CEO - Mark Mitchke

On behalf of the Boards of Directors of Washington Dental Service and Delta Dental of Washington (DDWA), I am pleased to announce that we have selected Mark Mitchke to serve as the next CEO of the two companies.

Mark is currently the Vice President and General Manager of Amazon Global Fulfillment Services, which provides small and medium-sized businesses fulfillment solutions to reach approximately 300 million Amazon customers around the world.

Mark’s appointment as CEO is the result of an extensive search and selection process over the past several months, following our current CEO Jim Dwyer’s retirement announcement earlier this year.

We knew we wanted a strategic leader to help guide us through the next phase of growth, drive innovation, maintain DDWA’s high operational standards and champion our mission to influence the changing health care landscape.

We also incorporated feedback from our dentist members who completed the survey a few months ago that you wanted a leader who listens and communicates effectively. These were top qualities we considered as we interviewed candidates. Based on all of these criteria, our selection of Mark as our next CEO was a unanimous Board decision.

Mark brings exceptional qualifications to his new position as our leader. He has a proven record of leading teams and innovating at scale in complex new environments, leveraging technology in the marketplace, and achieving outstanding results.

At Amazon, Mark manages a large team whose diverse areas of focus include product development, software engineering, machine learning, finance, business development, seller and customer support and operations. Mark excels in leading the collaboration that is essential to bring together multiple and sometimes disparate interests and priorities to deliver results.

Under his leadership since 2014, Amazon Global Fulfillment Services has empowered hundreds of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses to grow global businesses on Amazon and has quadrupled sales for Amazon.

Managing a variety of stakeholders is one of Mark’s core strengths. In his current role he is responsible for three business segments in the Amazon Marketplace: Fulfillment by Amazon, Amazon Global Selling and Seller Fulfillment Services. These marketplace businesses create products and services to empower sellers to build large businesses on Amazon while delivering new selection to Amazon’s buying customers, creating a win-win-win for sellers, buyers and Amazon. Balancing the needs of sellers, buying customers and internal Amazon teams in a global marketplace working with small businesses relates directly to Delta Dental’s core capabilities.

Mark is adept at navigating and leading new, complex industries. Prior to joining Amazon in 2013, Mark was a Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm, in Seattle. At McKinsey, Mark gained extensive experience in leading strategic change for a variety of organizations in a range of industries, developing a deep understanding of how to adapt and lead in new environments with varied stakeholders and company cultures. He has consistently shown that this adaptability is another of his unique strengths as a leader.

Mark has deep roots in the Seattle community. He and his wife Kris have lived in the area for more than 25 years. Mark has been involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska & Washington since 2005, served on the board from 2005 to 2010 and served as the Board Chairman in 2009. Mark and Kris have three children: Wyatt (14), Anna (12) and Bridget (10).

Mark will assume his new CEO duties by the end of the year. We look forward to introducing him formally when he starts, and Mark is committed to better understanding your issues and concerns by hearing from you directly as he begins this new phase of DDWA leadership.

We look forward to continuing to partner with you to shape and improve oral health in Washington and beyond.
